Proforma invoice

What a proforma invoice is in manufacturing orders, how it differs from a quote and a commercial invoice, and when to expect one.

What it is

A proforma invoice is a preliminary bill issued before work starts or goods ship — commonly used to request a deposit. It states what will be supplied and at what price, but it is not the final tax invoice.

Practical note

Check the proforma against the agreed quote line by line before paying a deposit — it is effectively the order confirmation. Quantities, spec references, and delivery terms should all match.
