ODM (original design manufacturer)

What an ODM is, how ODM differs from OEM and white-label, and what it means for IP and responsibilities when sourcing in the UK.

What it is

An ODM (original design manufacturer) provides a product design that already exists in their catalogue (often with light customisation such as branding, colours, or packaging). You are typically adopting their proven design rather than bringing a fully bespoke product definition.

Why it matters

ODM can be faster and lower risk when the design is mature, but your differentiation and IP position may be narrower than with a fully custom build. Clarify what you can change, who owns existing IP, and what happens if you want to exit the relationship later.
