Lead time

What manufacturing lead time means, what affects it in UK sourcing, and how to compare quotes fairly across factories.

What it is

Lead time is the time from a defined starting point—often order confirmation or deposit—to delivery of goods. In manufacturing, “lead time” is meaningless without agreeing what is included: materials, tooling, approvals, and shipping are often separate clocks.

What changes lead time

Material availability, queue position, complexity, regulatory checks, and your own approval speed all matter. If you need a date-critical launch, surface constraints early and ask for a timeline with dependencies, not a single headline number.
