Knit vs woven

The difference between knit and woven fabrics for apparel sourcing, and why the distinction matters for factories, stretch, and construction.

The difference

Woven fabrics are made from interlaced yarns and typically have less stretch unless elastane or mechanical stretch is added. Knits are looped structures and usually stretch more; they behave differently in cutting and sewing.

Why factories care

Construction methods, seam types, and machinery differ. Putting a woven construction brief on a knit body (or the reverse) produces poor samples and confused quotes.
