First-off sample

What a first-off sample is in manufacturing, how it differs from a prototype, and how brands use it to approve production in the UK.

What it is

A first-off sample is often the first unit produced using the intended production method, tooling, and materials—or the first unit from a production run used to confirm that reality matches the agreed specification.

It is different from a rough prototype: it is meant to prove the manufacturing line, not just the concept.

How to use it well

Agree in advance what you will inspect (dimensions, appearance, function, packaging), how you will approve or reject, and what happens if changes are needed. Clear criteria reduce expensive rework and relationship friction.
