CAD (computer-aided design)

What CAD files are in manufacturing, common formats brands send to UK factories, and how CAD relates to tooling and production.

What it is

CAD (computer-aided design) refers to digital models of a part or product, usually created in software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino, or similar tools. CAD is the bridge between your design intent and what a factory can machine, mould, or fabricate.

Formats and expectations

Factories may ask for native files or neutral exports (for example STEP, IGES, or DXF depending on process). The right format depends on the process: sheet metal, CNC, and injection moulding all have different downstream needs.

If you only have meshes (for example STL from a scan), say so early. Meshes can be workable for some processes but may need redesign or conversion before production.
