AQL (acceptable quality limit)

What AQL means in manufacturing quality inspection, how sampling plans work, and how brands use AQL when ordering production.

What it is

AQL (acceptable quality limit) is a statistical sampling standard for inspecting production batches: how many units to inspect and how many defects of each severity are tolerable before rejecting the batch.

Using it

Rather than "check everything", agree an AQL level and defect classification (critical/major/minor) in advance. It makes inspection results objective instead of a negotiation after the fact.
